The city of Karnal often referred to as the Rice Bowl of India, is a city located in the NCR. It lies on the western river bank of the river Yamuna, which separates Haryana from Uttar Pradesh. Thus, the Yamuna river forms its boundary along the eastern side. Geographically, the city can be divided into three agro-climatic regions, namely, the Khadar, Bhangar and the Nardak belt.

For all the history buffs out there, the city of Karnal is said to have been founded by Raja Karna, whom we all know from the Mahabharata. The National Dairy Research Institute is also located in the city. Dairy, in the form of yoghurt and milk, forms a major part of the diet of the locals.
With a population of 1,506,323, Karnal is the 333rd largely populated city in India. It also has a population density of 598 inhabitants per square kilometre. The people of Karnal mainly speak Hindi and Punjabi.
Karnal has a literacy rate of 74.73% and a sex ratio of 996 females for every 1000 males. Because of its steady development, Karnal has seen an 18.22% of population growth in the last year.
