Etymology

The name of the city is derived from the local word panch which means five and kula which means canals. Therefore, known as “The city of 5 canals”. Most probably referring to the five irrigation canals that divide the water from the Ghaggar-Hakra River.

According to the 2011 census, the city had a population of 561,293 in which male population was around 299,679 and female population was 261,614. The majority of the people of the city are mainly Hindus. The literacy rate of the district is 83.4%.

The city has a sub-tropical continental monsoon climate having, cool winters, hot summer and good monsoon rainfall. The temperature of the city varies from -1 °C to 43 °C. The mountains of Kasauli are clearly visible from Panchkula.
